In a nutshell:
Charming hotel housed in a historic building in downtown la Paz.  Artistic property, lovingly restored by the owner, who is also committed to sustainable tourism.  Suitable for children aged 12 and over.  Meals are no longer served at el Angel Azul.

Visitors to La Paz will be delighted to find El Angel Azul, a quaint property nestled in the heart of the historical downtown area of the city. The eleven rooms are arranged around a beautiful and serene gardened courtyard, where guests can relax amidst flowers, fountains and palm trees.

El Angel Azul lies within two blocks of the Cathedral, yet once within its doors the residents feel miles away from any traffic noise and city bustle.  The restoration of this landmark monument (once the city courthouse) is the work of the Swiss owner Esther Ammann. Esther has created a haven for tourists, who can enjoy lazy siestas within the ancient walls.

Having fallen in love with the area many years ago, Esther is also a great source of local information and can recommend the best restaurants and sightseeing opportunities. A helpful city map with tips and suggestions is provided in each room.

The guest rooms are fully air-conditioned and have pretty tiled bathrooms. They are decorated with local handicrafts and brightly colored Mexican blankets, and many feature high ceilings. The hotel’s Suite is on the second floor and boasts a large terrace.

In order to maintain the tranquil atmosphere at El Angel Azul, only children aged twelve and over are accepted.  Breakfast is no longer served, but guests have use of the kitchen, and a list of recommended restaurants is provided.

Rooms

Steeped in history, the ten guest rooms at El Angel Azul have been refurbished to provide quaint and comfortable lodgings for visitors. All rooms are air-conditioned, though the thick stone walls provide good insulation from the summer heat.

Each room has a small but pretty bathroom with step-in shower and colorful tiles. Ceilings are often very high, especially in the historical rooms, and there are some lovely quirky touches such as hand-drawn paintings of cherubs on the walls.

The suite is located on the second floor and features a queen size bed, TV and VCR, mini-refrigerator and large private terrace.

history

The Angel Azul Inn is located in the historic center of la Paz just a few blocks from the Cathedral. The building was formerly the city courthouse and has been designated a historic monument by INAH.  Esther Ammann started to renovate the building in 1998 and created this very intimate and charming hotel.

Since 2008, El Angel Azul has been a proud member of the UN Foundation of Sustainable Tourism, and the World Heritage Alliance. They are, therefore, committed to providing green service to the clients.

Here are some of the ways in which the hotel is working to protect the environment:
In our kitchen we use soy oil, and eggs from free-range hens at local farms.
We use only local products and fresh food in season.
We do not serve red meat or pork.
During the summer, we don’t use hot water in the showers.
We recycle plastic, glass bottles, and aluminium cans.
We use biodegradable laundry soap.
