In a nutshell:
Eclectic boutique hotel with eight simple but chic and air-conditioned rooms plus a gourmet restaurant. Beachfront, barefoot style, relaxing.

Al Cielo is a diminutive hotel on a fabulously long, wide powder-soft beach on Mexico’s Caribbean coast. For those yearning for the simple life, it is heaven indeed – Al Cielo has a chic “barefoot and linen” restaurant, and there are a couple of beach bars within walking distance.

Although rustic, the four guest rooms at Al Cielo have all the essentials for a comfortable stay, including air-conditioning, modern bathrooms and plenty of electric sockets for hair dryers, laptops and other desert island essentials.

The villas “Atardecer” and “Girasol” lie just behind the guest rooms and are a perfect choice for a small family. They have one bedroom and a sitting room with two convertible beds.

The lavish new suites “la Mar” and “Villa del Patron” are romantic beachfront accommodations with private plunge pools.  The Villa del Patron has two bedrooms and can sleep up to four people.

Massages and other spa services can be arranged at the hotel; snorkeling, diving, fishing and other water sports can be organized further along the bay. Bring a rental car and you’re also within easy reach of Tulum, Xcaret, Xel-ha and Playa del Carmen – if you can drag yourselves away from Al Cielo’s fabulous beach, that is!

Rooms

Al Cielo has just eight guest rooms and suites, of which six are perched right on the sands on beautiful Xpu-ha bay.  The four beachfront rooms are ideal for couples. Just behind, the”Villa Atardecer” and “Villa Girasol” are independent one-bedroom suites with roof terraces and separate sitting rooms.

The four rooms have recently undergone a full refurbishment, and now feature air-conditioning, bigger bathrooms and large terraces. Ground floor rooms have a plunge pool on their terrace, whilst upper level rooms have a hammock plus a bathtub inside.

The two new suites, la Mar and Villa del Patron, are the most lavish accommodations at Al Cielo, each with a private pool.

These four guest rooms have all the right ingredients for an idyllic beach vacation. The spacious interiors feature local hardwoods and are designed to complement the tropical surroundings. The location is perfect – step outside and you are directly on one of the most beautiful beaches of Mexico’s Caribbean coast.

The two rooms on the second floor are Viento and Agua. These rooms have wonderful ocean views, and feature a large hammock on their terrace.

On the first (ground) floor are Tierra and Fuego. Both are now equipped with a romantic plunge pool to the side of the room, surrounded by shrubbery for privacy. These rooms also have another terrace overlooking the beach to their front.

The screened louver windows on three sides of the room can be opened to allow the sea breezes to circulate, bringing the gentle sound of the ocean into your dreams. Alternatively, modern air-conditioning units have been installed to keep the rooms cool even during the hottest summer months.

The new, extended bathrooms are have a large shower rose positioned over a sunken tub. A stylish vanity unit with a porcelain basin adds a touch of glamour. Each room has a hairdryer and a small safe too. In the bedroom there are electrical outlets for guests’ laptops and travel appliances.

Villa Atardecer means “Sunset Villa” – a name derived from the spectacular evening vistas gained from the large rooftop terrace. As the sun dips below the jungle canopy, the terrace is bathed in a warm glow. From the rooftop, there are also views of the Caribbean. The villa lies just behind Al Cielo’s oceanfront rooms and is a fantastic choice for a family.

The Villa has one bedroom, plus a spacious sitting room with two sofas that can make comfortable beds. Both rooms are equipped with air-conditioning and ceiling fans but no televisions.

Also on the ground floor is the bright and airy bedroom, which has a king bed. It has a walk-in closet and there’s plenty of space to add a crib if required.

The bathroom opens off the living room and has a large shower above a sunken tub. A hairdryer and bathrobes can be found in the stylish vanity area.

The villa overlooks jungle gardens and a private cenote to the rear. It is only a few paces from the beach, and from Al Cielo’s exquisite restaurant. However, room service is available should you prefer to dine in the villa or on the roof terrace.

The new suite “la Mar” takes up the entire second floor of Al Cielo’s latest building. It has a king bed, from which panoramic ocean views can be gained.

The bedroom has a sitting area and there is also an en-suite bathroom. Outside, on the magnificent ocean view terrace, guests can enjoy a plunge pool with some of the best views on Xpu-ha beach.

The suite “la Mar” is above the “Villa del Patron” or Owners suite.

The Villa del Patron is a two bedroom, two bathroom unit located on the ground floor of Al Cielo’s newest building. It directly faces the Caribbean and enjoys wonderful views of the beach and the sea.

The villa is fully air-conditioned and beautifully decorated with smooth wooden floors. All woodwork in the building is made from mahogany and other tropical woods native to the Yucatan.

Both the Master Bedroom and the second bedroom have a king bed and en-suite bathroom with shower. Other features include an expresso machine, refrigerator, and wireless internet access.

Outside, on the beachfront terrace, is a private infinity pool.

restaurant

This chic beachfront restaurant is the perfect setting for romantic evenings and relaxed, sunny breakfasts. The ocean view is breathtaking, and there’s no dress code – evening dress or bare feet are equally acceptable.

Tables are beautifully dressed and lit by romantic candlelight in the evening. Seafood is a specialty here and there’s an excellent selection of wines. The bar also serves a tempting variety of tropical cocktails.

And if you fancy a change, for a casual lunch there are a couple of cafes a short walk along the beach where you can enjoy quesadillas or tacos and a cold beer.

beach

Over a mile of gorgeous beach begins just steps from your room. On arrival you’ll be allocated your own palapa shade with two sun loungers – no need to get up early to find the perfect spot, those chairs will always be ready for you. The turquoise-hued Caribbean is perfect for swimming, and you can arrange water sports at a dive shop just a short walk away.

It’s possible to snorkel off the beach (the reef is a short boat ride away, but there are some rocks under the water here that make for interesting snorkeling). At sunset, a stroll along the beach is the perfect start to a romantic evening at Al Cielo.

Driving directions from Cancun

Upon leaving Cancun airport turn right (south) onto Highway 307 following the sign marked Chetumal or TULUM.

There are gas stations along the way at Puerto Morelos, Playa del Carmen, and then Puerto Aventuras.

After approximately 48 miles (77 km) you will pass Puerto Aventuras and 5km later you will see the Xpu-ha Palace Hotel on the left hand side of the road.

The entrance to Al Cielo Hotel (it has a small banner for the hotel) is the first driveway right after the driveway from Hotel Esencia, on the left hand side of the road.

You will need to drive a little further and make a U-turn at Hotel Catalonia Royal Tulum.

If you miss the Catalonia Royal Tulum resort, continue down the road a short distance to the Pemex Gas Station on your right, turn around and go back.

Turn down the previous entrance from Hotel Esencia , and follow it to the beach where it ends. You will have reached Al Cielo Hotel which is right on the beach.
