Charming and attractive little hotel with a perfect location close to the Parroquia in San Miguel de Allende. Lots of colonial features, pretty courtyard restaurant, bougainvillea-clad walls. A gem for travelers looking for affordable rooms with lots of character. Can be noisy, due to church bells at the Parroquia.
Wonderfully pretty Posada Carmina has a perfect location in the heart of the historic center of San Miguel de Allende and boasts genuine colonial charm. In a city that can be overwhelmed with foreigners, this hotel is Mexican-owned and managed, and is part of the history of San Miguel.
Recent refurbishments have seen all rooms equipped with cable TVs, direct dial telephones and sparkling bathrooms. New rooms have also been added to the rear of the property and are just as desirable, with great views over the rooftops of the city.
The excellent restaurant at Posada Carmina is popular with tourists and locals, and prices are very reasonable. The setting is picturesque whether eating beneath the orange trees in the courtyard or inside next to grand stone fireplaces. The staff are pleasant and speak some English.
One disadvantage of the close proximity to the Jardin and the Parroquia (San Miguel’s unique church) is that the location can be noisy. The Parroquia’s bell tower is only a short distance from the Posada Carmina’s guest rooms and light sleepers can expect to be woken every hour from around 7:00am.
That said this city of fiestas is seldom a quiet town, and we reckon that this is a small price to pay for the convenience and ambience in this delightful hotel.
Posada Carmina has eleven guest rooms on the second floor of the old section of the hotel, and these are the “Luxury rooms”. A further six rooms in a new extension towards the rear of the hotel are the “Standard rooms”. Many of the latter enjoy delightful views of San Miguel, and the former overlook the pretty internal courtyard.
Luxury rooms are full of colonial charm, many with high ceilings and all with simple but appealing furnishings. Recent refurbishments have sensitively updated the amenities, and all rooms now have gleaming white bathrooms and efficient showers, cable TVs and direct dial telephones.
The most requested rooms are those with balconies and views of the Parroquia – room #107 has a small balcony with this view, and #111 has a window seat. We also love the 3 rooms (#104, #105 and #106) that open onto the sunny terrace shown above – this is a great place for reading and relaxing in San Miguel’s perpetual spring climate.

Room 101 is a large room at the front of the hotel with a small step-out balcony overlooking the street. It has a ceiling fan and a heater.
Room 102 is a spacious room with a king bed overlooking the street. It has an incredibly high ceiling (around twenty feet – almost 7 metres – high) and glazed doors that open up onto the street Cuna de Allende.
Room 104 is a single room in the original section of the hotel that opens out onto the colonnaded veranda. It’s a smallish room but has lots of character, including high ceilings and an interesting brick-tiled floor. There’s a mirrored vanity area outside the bathroom and a writing desk too.
Another lovely single room is 107, which has full-length windows and a step-out balcony overlooking the main courtyard. Guests can enjoy glimpses of the Parroquia from this room, but may also be woken early in the morning by the church bells!
Room 111 is a spacious room with two double beds and a cute window overlooking the main courtyard. It enjoys glimpses of the Parroquia spire above the rooftops of the hotel, but can be noisy.
The Single rooms have one double (matrimonial) bed and can accommodate either one or two people. Room 113 is in the new section of the hotel on the ground floor. It has a ceiling fan, a heater and a bright bathroom with shower.
Room 117 is a bright, sunny double room with a king bed. It’s on the ground floor in the new section and has views over the street to the rear of the hotel. It also has a roomy bathroom and a gas heater for the sometimes cool winter evenings here.
The restaurant at Posada Carmina is a favorite with locals and tourists alike. It features an extensive menu of mainly Mexican dishes that all very reasonably priced. It’s hard to resist the bountiful breakfasts served under the orange trees in the courtyard, with a choice including hotcakes, fruit, cereals and a list of egg specialties.
In addition to the courtyard tables, it’s worth checking out the dining room at the rear of the hotel, which was once used as stables. Some of the original fixtures have been retained, including stone troughs and impressive fireplaces.

The hotel is located on Calle Cuna de Allende in the heart of the town, just south of the Jardin. Parking may be possible on the street outside the hotel (note that parking is difficult in San Miguel de Allende).
