the guest rooms

The rooms at Basico all have women's names rather than numbers so you'll need a good memory!

There are three room categories, Lounge View, Town View and Ocean View. The rooms are almost identical but are categorized by their location and view. Lounge View Rooms face the internal lounge areas of the hotel, the Town and Ocean View Rooms have windows facing the streets and ocean.

The rooms are minimalist and stylish in their design; almost clinical in some respects. Walls consist of bare cream cement tablets (complete with rivet holes), while the floors are highly polished cream marble with a relief of red mottled tiles. One wall is almost entirely windows so there's lots of natural light (though this does mean there's not much privacy, particularly in the Lounge View Rooms), but they can be screened using the vertical black and white latex rubber window blinds.

Each room features a king size bed set in the center of the room, and an open plan hanging space for clothes. The beds are quite high and underneath them you'll find storage for luggage, a minibar, a pair of chained stools named ´los sobrinos´ (´the nephews´) and even a pair of flippers!

On the wall is a rubber tire which can be taken to the beach. You'll also find an instant camera and a guest book where you can add comments and photos! There's even a compass to help with the feung shui - the hotel recommends that guests sleep with head pointing north.

The rooms feature an open plan bathroom with an impressively large rectangular resin tub and an equally big rain shower over. There is a vanity area with good lighting and a large mirror. In keeping with the design theme of the hotel the water pipes are exposed with industrial valve style taps.

The toilet is in a separate room; it's in an old-fashioned style with a high cistern that contrasts well with the modern disco light lamp pull. There's a good supply of towels and toiletries, but unfortunately no hairdryers! The good news though is that these are easily available through the front desk.

Lighting in the bedrooms is quite subdued but much brighter lighting is provided in the bathrooms.

None of the rooms have balconies but both the Town View and Ocean View rooms provide an excellent view of the town. All rooms have flat-screen wall-mounted TVs, DVD players and cordless telephones.

Guests receive complimentary membership at the local video store so you can rent films and music to play in your room.

Room service is available from 8.00am - 11.00pm and includes simple meals like burgers, guacamole and chips and tacos.
