excursions shown in the table below are highly recommended.

We also strongly recommend the specialist excursions offered
by a group called Expediciones Sierra Norte, who have an
office on Garcia Vigil (one of the main streets in the
historic center of Oaxaca). This group's expert staff lead
one day, two day and longer hiking and mountain biking tours
into the towns in the hills around Oaxaca known as the
Pueblos Mancomunados de la Sierra Norte. These tours will
introduce you to the traditional way of life in these small
villages, and give you the chance to observe the spectacular
scenery. Two or more day trips involve overnight
accommodations in the simple but very comfortable lodges

| Mitla and the Tule tree plus Teotitlan (hALF DAY) | The gigantic Tree of El Tule is 2000 years old and is an incredible sight. Mitla is an archaeological site outstandingly beautiful for its magnificent fretwork made of countless polished stones. At San Bartolo Coyotepec the craftsmen are famous for making black pottery using ancient techniques. Santo Tomas Jalietza has skilled weavers who use back-strap looms to make belts, jackets, placemats, ponchos, etc. At the market of Ocotlán de Morelos you will find fruit, herbs, red clay pottery items, textiles and embroidered clothes. |
