excursions
self-drive routes
Few tourists visit the central and southern parts of the state of Campeche, but this area is rich in both architectural and natural treasures. A visit to Hacienda Uayamon offers the chance to explore little visited but strategically important Mayan sites buried deep in the jungle and still surrounded by intrigue and speculation. Each of the following excursions is a unique adventure and will appeal to young and old alike.
Campeche
The walled city of Campeche has a romantic history of
pirates, conquistadors and shipwrecks. Be
sure to visit to the fort, cultural center, cathedral,
churches and handicraft center. A tour of the city in the
"tourist train" and a visit to the evening sound and light
show at the city walls are highlights.
Colonial Mayan Circuit (includes Edzna)
The archaeological site of Edzna is one of the most visited
in Campeche, and boasts some fine structures. The
magnificent "Building of the Five Levels" and the Temple of
the Masks are highlights. On this excursion you
can compare the Mayan and Colonial architecture, with
a visit to the Hacienda of Hobomo and the village of Uzacil.
Archaeology in South Campeche (Xpuhil, Becan, Chicanna)
These remote and little visited sites have some of the best
examples of "Rio Bec" style, featuring dramatic masks and
tall towers with impossibly steep staircases. Becan is also
the only Mayan city surrounded by a recognizable moat. This
excursion is an opportunity to visit important
archaeological sites not easily accessible from most tourist
areas.
"Archaeology and Ecology" (Calakmul and Balamku)
The significance of Calakmul is only just emerging - it is
believed to have rivaled Tikal in Guatemala as one of the
greatest Mayan cities. Highlights include some of the
tallest pyramids in Mesoamerica, imposing plazas, plus
access through the rainforests of the Calakmul Biosphere
Reserve. Balamku (House of the Jaguar) has elaborate
frescoes with touches of original paint still intact. Very
few visitors reach these ruins, deep in the heart of the
Ruta Maya.
"To Turtle Step"
Visit the turtle camp of Punta Xen to observe and learn
about the turtle adoption program. The excursion also
includes a visit to the Hacienda San Jose Carpizo, one of
the finest examples of productive architecture in the state,
and the colonial towns of Hobomo and Seyba Cabecera.

The following excursions can be arranged in advance or
