We cut our trip short by an additional day. While we expected a rustic experience, we did not expect to encounter the trouble with mosquitos and bugs that plagued our trip. Every night we were fighting mosquitos that were in the room and inside the net. My face is covered in mosquito bites and I am an actress and due back on set on Friday and will have to hope the welts subside in time. There were roaches that crawled into our bags and the last straw was the bat flying around our room.

We decided to leave late last night and spent the night in Cancun. While we were hastily getting out things together, we noticed that the bungalow had large gaps/openings throughout the structure. It's no wonder the nets and screens were futile. We even attempted to sleep outdoors on the beach each night but it rained and we were forced back inside. You know there's a problem if you can't sleep in your hotel room.

We had a lovely trip, but he Hemingway is a bit doubtful; I'm not sure it's of a quality that your other listings are so I don't know that you want to rush to add them to your website just yet.

My husband and I remarked that the "eco" doesn't stay for "ecology" but for "economy".  No water bottles in the cabañas, two towels for four people, no hot water for the first two days, no light for almost an hour after dark so we huddled around our one flashlight (they don't provide any) until they remembered or fixed the generator, and one of the two light switches didn't work for the first day.  The beds were rock-hard and we woke up stiff and achy every morning.  Also we had excruciatingly slow and sometimes meager breakfast and dinner.  We ended up walking down the road to be fed and given coffee on a couple of mornings as their service began at 7:00 whereas Hemingway didn't start til 8:00 am and food didn't really show up (if they remembered to offer more than bread) until after 8:30, and we often wanted to get going in the morning to beat the heat.

There was no sign of anything ecological in their approach - unlike some neighboring facilities which had solar or wind energy, Hemingway just has a generator and propane which apparently weren't always working or gassed up.  The proprietor did show a lot of interest in her own building project - her personal quarters were being constructed; the peak noise generated during afternoon siesta was pretty annoying, not to mention the fact that our cabaña and the neighboring one were being used for the construction worker's water source, so our outdoor shower had the workmen's hose attached and the neighbors had the hose draped across their walk and buckets filled and dumped by their front door.

Our car was broken into while parked in their small parking area (the only space available was on the road); nothing stolen as it was empty but we had to deal with repairing the lock on the trunk (boot).  All of this would have been somewhat amusing or tolerable had we not been charged high season rates.   At $150 a night this would have been tolerable but at $240 we were not thrilled, and in fact considered moving after enduring the 2nd day with no hot water, no evening light, termite detritus all over our clothes (from the beams above) and stiff, painful backs in the morning.  But it was just too much of a hassle to find another place and our kids loved the beach.

As to the positives:  Hemingway has a stunning location with a gorgeous and fairly private beachfront, which they kept cleaner than others just down the beach.  The cabañas were of a very good size.  We wish we'd had the one with the shaded porch though.  The hammocks and other reclining areas are very comfortable - there just aren't quite enough of them when everyone is there.  I think this place runs best during low season!  (One of our fellow guests remarked that they'd had wonderful breakfasts and lots of attention for their first two days but once more people started showing up the food and service quality dropped precipitously).

Thanks for your help in making our reservations.  We'll certainly use and recommend Different World again...just don't know if we'll be dashing back to Hemingway till they get their act together.
