the courtyard
The Villa was built between 1903 and 1905 and was one of
the most impressive mansions on Calle 59, an important
thoroughfare in the city.
Early photographs of the Villa show the courtyard looking almost exactly as it does today, with the same ornate fountain and pond and the same magnificent tiling on the floors of the verandas surrounding the courtyard.
Descendents of the same family owned the Villa until
1999, although it was originally twice the size (the
family were forced to divide the building as hardship
fell upon the area after the demise of the henequen
trade).
The mansion was purchased by a group of American and Canadian investors in 2004 and was lovingly restored to its former glory and opened to the public as a luxury hotel.
