Hurricane Dean

Hurricane Dean made landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula near to the border of Belize early on Tuesday August 21st, as a category 5 hurricane. The eye of the hurricane passed over a rural and sparsely populated area and the major resorts of Cancun and Playa del Carmen did not suffer any damage. Some hotels in Tulum suffered damage to structures close to the beach and to palapa (thatched roofs). The majority will be open in either a few days or a few weeks. We will be updating this page regularly with news about the hotel re-opening dates.

Airports: The airport in Cancun is operating as normal.

Hotels: Most hotels in the areas of Cancun, Playa del Carmen and the Riviera Maya have re-opened or will re-open within one or two days. Several of our recommended properties in Tulum are reporting some damage and are currently evaluating re-opening dates. We are expecting that most will re-open within a few days or a few weeks at the most.
