Mexico is a vast country and offers a wealth of things to do and see. Finding the experience that you want will depend largely on chosing the right area for your trip. Decide on the most important aspects of your vacation and plan accordingly. In order to achieve more of your goals, you might find spliting your trip between two different locations will give you a more diverse stay.

| Caribbean Coast | This area is a great introduction to Mexico. | Mexico City | This huge metropolis with its museums, galleries and archaeological sites is a fascinating city. It gives a great insight into the history and culture of Mexico. Visit the Zocalo, see the ancient ruins of the Aztec city of Tenochtitlán and Palacio de las Bellas Artes. On the outskirts of the city are the magnificent pyramids of Teotihuacan and the beautiful floating gardens of Xochimilco. Mexico City is a good choice for those looking to combine a more cultural stay with a beach destination. | Southern Mexico | This area of Mexico is still quite largely undeveloped. Acapulco and Zihuatanejo are some of the most popular resorts. These areas offer great beaches and water activities such as diving and fishing, as well has having a great selection of restaurants and shops. Puerto Escondido is less touristy and has one of the world's best surfing beaches, it is a good choice for those interested in nature and wildlife. Costa Chica is a long stretch of quiet coastline with small cabana hotels, perfect for those looking for a simpe beach vacation. | Central Pacific Coast | This area has some long stretches of deserted coastline and the strong waves in some areas means that there are some good surfing spots. Fishing and diving are also popular. The largest town is Puerto Vallarta which has plenty of restaurants and good shopping. For those looking for a more relaxed vacation the northern towns of Bucerias and Sayulita area good option. To the south of Puerto Vallarta there are some remote but very luxurious hotels. | Baja California | The Baja Peninsula has a dramtic landscape. From the rugged coastline of Los Cabos edged by desert and cactus to the East Cape with its deserted long sandy beaches. The region has some excellent golf courses. San Jose del Cabo and towns like Todos Santos have an authentic Mexican feel and some very good restaurants and art and craft shops. Cabo San Lucas is more of a resort with lots of action both day and night. The area has some good fishing, diving and snorkeling spots as well as a few surfing beaches. From December to April the grey whales migrate to the warm waters around Baja and whale watching tours can be arranged. | Central Highlands | There are some great cities to explore to the north west of Mexico City. These places provide a great insight into the history and culture of Mexico. Many of the cities were silver mining towns which grew and prospered, many still have mines open for tourists to visit. These cities have magnificent colonial architecture, pretty cobbled streets, colorful plazas, art galleries and excellent museums. | Yucatan and Campeche | An area steeped in culture from pretty towns to ancient Mayan cities to the calm waters of the Gulf Coast. Merida is the colorful and lively capital and definitely worth a visit, it has art galleries, craft shops and wonderful colonial architecture. No visit would be complete without seeing Chichen Itza or Uxmal, some of the most impressive Mayan sites.
