In a nutshell:
Located on a hillside overlooking Oaxaca, the Victoria has some advantages over more central accommodations. The beautiful gardens and large pool will appeal to children and are hard to find in downtown hotels.  A shuttle operates between the hotel and downtown.

The Hotel Victoria allows its guests to enjoy all that Oaxaca has to offer, and provides a relaxing retreat to come home to. After a day’s sightseeing, it’s blissful to return and have a refreshing dip in the pool, followed by a drink on the terrace – the perfect place for postcard writing as you gaze down over the city. If you’re feeling energetic, you could even have a game of tennis at dusk!

The hotel is set up on the Fortin hill, about five minutes out of town by car – there is a regular shuttle service from the hotel which drops you off downtown and picks up again. This service means that you hardly miss being in the center of town at all.

The Villas here are unlike usual hotel rooms and feel like your own little home from home set in a lovely garden. The rooms have good amenities: all have satellite TV, mini-bar, hairdryer, and room service available.

The grounds at the Hotel Vitoria are superbly maintained, with springy green grass underfoot and an abundance of colorful plants and trees.  It’s a definite must when staying here to eat at the restaurant and try some traditional Oaxacan food – they have a sampler plate which allows you to try a little of all things local and delicious, such as tamales, Oaxacan cheese, grasshoppers(!) and mole sauce.

The features that make Hotel Victoria special for us though are the rolling green gardens, and the simply stunning views of Oaxaca and the surrounding mountains. The vistas just make you want to linger over your meal that bit longer, or have just one more margarita at the terrace bar.

Rooms

There are a total of 150 rooms at the Hotel Victoria, all offer air conditioning, satellite TV, minibar, safety deposit box, direct dial telephone and hairdryer.

The main building houses the Standard Rooms, the Villas are scattered around the garden of the hotel, and the Junior Suites are in their own building near to the main entrance.

You can call the lobby for a lift from your room to reception or anywhere in the hotel, this is exceptionally useful if you have lots of luggage on arrival.

Standard Rooms are housed in the main building of the hotel. These rooms have the same basic amenities as the others, including air conditioning, mini-bar, safety deposit box and TV.

Some of these rooms have nice views, others simply look onto the rear part of the hotel. Bathrooms are simple, and include a tub and shower.

If you intend to spend the majority of your time out of the room exploring Oaxaca and the surrounding areas, then these rooms would be a good value-for-money option, but we reckon that the Junior Suites and Villas are much nicer.

Junior Suites are large, spacious, bright and sunny rooms offering fantastic views of Oaxaca. These rooms all have two double beds and some have an extra sofa bed. There is a large wardrobe and chest of drawers, cable TV, table and chairs and of course the stunning terrace.

Bathrooms have a single vanity area with toiletries, face cloths, towels and a hairdryer. There is a full size tub with shower overhead.

The terraces offer awe inspiring views of Oaxaca, with two comfortable chairs from which to enjoy the view from the room. The French windows are the full width of the room, and you can step out onto the small terrace and take in the spectacular sight.

Villas are mostly scattered amongst the hotels pretty gardens, where lush green grass and colorful well loved plants abound. The individual buildings are often almost camouflaged by the pretty foliage, and are located either around the pool or in the gardens.

These rooms all have small terraces with a table and chairs, from most you can enjoy a view of the city below, watching the twinkling lights of Oaxaca at night is a real treat.

restaurant

The open sided restaurant is a treat to have breakfast at in the early morning sunshine; we love the tables on the edge overlooking the scenery below.

Breakfast consists of a bountiful buffet with all the food you would expect, including cereals, fruit, toast, pancakes, eggs. There are also some traditional Oaxacan foods for you to try.

The evening meal is a romantic affair, with the city lights twinkling below and candlelit tables.  The menu is extensive and very appetizing, with lots of international dishes as well as lots of Oaxacan tasters. While staying here be adventurous and try the grasshopper, it’s delicious!

pool

When staying at the Victoria, it’s impossible not to be lured to the stunning pool area. Set around the large inviting pool are comfortable sun loungers and umbrellas, with a bar and friendly waiter at one end to bring you refreshments.

Perched on the hillside, there are stunning views on a clear day of the surrounding mountains and the city below.

The Hotel Victoria is located at the top of the Fortin Hill, just five minutes from the city center and a short trip to Monte Alban and Mitla (about US$3).
