Southern Mexico has lush tropical rainforests, fascinating colonial cities, sparkling bays with majestic mountain backdrops, and little visited archaeological sites.  It’s a huge area, so we suggest visiting one location for a leisurely break, or planning a multi-center itineary for a longer trip.

Here are some suggestions:

• Oaxaca is one of the most beautiful colonial cities in Mexico and you can spend a week or more exploring its historic center alone.  Add sightseeing trips to Monte Alban, Mitla and, for a longer trip, a few days hiking in the majestic Sierra Norte.
• For a relaxed, inexpensive and bohemian beach vacation, check out the towns of San Agustinillo and Mazunte with their low-key surfer vibe and rustic cabanas.
• Interjet now has flights to Palenque from Mexico City or Tuxtla Gutierrez. Or fly to Villahermosa, stop off at la Venta to see the Olmec heads, and then proceed by road (2.5 hours) to Palenque.
• Glamorous Acapulco has one of the most beautiful bays in the world.  See it at its best from Las Brisas Acapulco.
• Zihuatanejo and Ixtapa have some incredibly romantic boutique hotels and are ideal for winter honeymoons as the sea and air temperatures are higher than more northerly resorts such as Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos.
